Make Better Trading Decisions

By GKFX Team  |  10/10/2018 14:21

In this article, I’m going to show you five tips for making better trading decisions.

  1. Confidence comes from practice
Traders at the start of their careers face two main disadvantages. On one hand, they lack sufficient experience to know their strategy works and to have faith in it. On the other, their pattern-recognition skills are only just beginning to take shape. Start by understanding clearly why each ingredient in your strategy works, and why it’s in the checklist in the first place. From there, it is simple enough to manually back-test historical charts to find examples, as well as forward-test to achieve the same goal.
  • When in doubt, practice. The pros do it - why not you?
  • Positive thinking trumps negative thinking. Always.

Takeaway – Adopt a positive mindset and be patient, both with yourself and the market. Good, valuable experience comes from good habits.
  1. Understand why you are taking the trade
Trading is evidence based. We therefore need to build a solid case for why we want to trade in a particular direction, and also for why our chosen entry is the most efficient available to us.
  • We are NOT taking the trade because we ‘have a feeling’
  • We are NOT taking the trade because we are angry or frustrated
  • We are NOT taking the trade because the ‘news is negative/positive’
  • We are NOT taking the trade because we are attached to the instrument eg. Gold, Barclays, etc.
  • We are definitely NOT taking the trade because it’s oversold/overbought and ‘will turn soon’

Takeaway – Build a case for either taking or not taking the trade. The best trades will have multiple reasons to take them, signalled by price action. This is your checklist.
  1. Keep it tidy
Clean, uncluttered charts could help give a clearer picture. They also enable our brain to focus on what is most important. As we all know, the modern world is full of distractions designed to tear our attention away from what really matters!
Good traders keep their minds and behaviour tidy by taking a disciplined approach. Discipline takes effort, but the results are worth it.
Takeaway – Good trading is all keeping things clear and focussed. From the charts to our behaviour.
  1. Inaction can lead to problems
It’s important to understand the difference between unwisely taking a trade through impatience and failing to act when required. Our obligation as traders is twofold; to ensure our accounts are built with profits and protected from losses.
  • The biggest losses can come from NOT cutting losing trades
  • If in doubt, get out. Or better still, don’t get in in the first place
  • Not taking action can lead to a feeling of helplessness and depression

Takeaway – Always have a clear reason in your head, and/or on paper, as to why you are or are not taking action. This is why we plan our trades, and then trade our plan. It makes decisions easier when we are least equipped to think clearly.
  1. Keep the edge
Please remind yourself of this: traders can only execute their trades correctly so long as they possess a recognisable edge. This edge manifests as a clear pattern of success, with a lack of evidence to the contrary. If at any time we cannot honestly say we have an edge, that the evidence points in our favour, then we are duty-bound to abort our trade.

Takeaway – Trader 1, “Should I trade the news?” Trader 2, “Do you have the edge?” Knowing why we are trading, or not trading, gives us control and peace-of-mind, which gives us confidence over time and leaves us happier about our choices, which in turn leads to us making better choices going forward. This is a self-made, self-fulfilling circle.
