Weekly market overview – 11/01/2016

Can Uyanık  |  January / 3. Week
Big moves out of China catalyzed big declines across global financial markets, and all eyes turn to Asian markets as they could set the pace for trading once again in the week ahead.
The US Dollar has extended its gains against higher yields currencies and risk-correlated assets as expected, but as well suffered against lower yields  currencies, and other safe havens – universally. This raises doubts regarding the US Dollar going forward.

Another big week for the British Pound left the GBP/USD exchange rate at fresh monthly highs, but an even bigger week ahead warns of major volatility.
A further deterioration in trader sentiment combined with an improvement in Japan's Balance of payments may encourage increased demand for the Yen and trigger another near term selloff in the USD/JPY as market participants scale back their appetite for risk.

The Gold prices are significantly higher this week with the precious metal rallying nearly 3.9% to trade at 1103 ahead of the New York close on Friday.
On the other hand, Copper prices sinks to 6 and a half year lows as China markets plunge once again. Copper prices tumbled to the lowest level since April 2009 on Monday, as steep declines on Chinese stock markets dampened appetite for the red metal.

Meanwhile in Asia, the Shanghai Composite index closed down 5.3%, the smaller Shenzhen Composite Index sank 6.6%, and the CSI 300 Index lost 5%, despite efforts by Beijing to stabilize the market. Last week, the Shanghai composite lost all of its 2015 gains, falling 10% in just 5 days.

Market players are concerned that the plunge in the stock market could spread to other parts of the Chinese economy, triggering fears that the Asian nation's demand for the industrial metal will decline. The Asian nation is the world's largest Copper consumer, accounting for nearly 45% of the world consumption.
